The agents had collected around Rs. 1.5 lakh to Rs. 3 lakh from each family on the promise of ferrying them to Australia.Displaying a few copies of the photograph of a fishing trawler, Mr. Sylendra Babu said a small boat cannot ferry a huge crowd to the distant Australia. “Australia is over 5,400 km away from Tamil Nadu. “Not only will you lose your hard-earned money, but will also risk your lives,” he said. “The motive of such agents is only to make money by duping you,” he said. He advised the Sri Lankan nationals against falling prey to the lure of agents who promise to ferry them to Australia. Around 550 Sri Lankan Tamils from India and Sri Lanka have died in such attempts, he said. The ADGP said the government was providing assistance to the refugees. He wanted them to concentrate on educating their children well. “Once they become doctors and engineers, they will take you to Australia or New Zealand through legal means,” he said. The Coastal Security Group has begun an awareness campaign in the Sri Lankan refugee camps across the Tamil Nadu State to sensitise them of the lurking danger in making stealthy attempts to reach Australia, a Hindu news report said. The Additional Director-General of Police (CSG), C. Sylendra Babu, addressed the first meeting at the Anaiyur Sri Lankan refugees camp yesterday. It takes 20 days to reach there. These boats have no facility to take you there, he said. The campaign was organised in the backdrop of the failed attempt made by 120 Sri Lankan refugees from various camps to flee to Australia on April 6.They were rescued by the Coast Guard and the Coastal Security Group after they were stranded in the boat following an engine breakdown.

Scorpions collapse, semis spot in danger

first_imgPORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, (CMC): Jamaica Scorpions jeopardised their chances of a semi-final spot in the Regional Super50 when they stumbled to a 73-run defeat at the hands of Barbados Pride following another weak batting effort here yesterday. Chasing 247 for victory at the National Cricket Centre, Scorpions collapsed from a strong position of 61 without loss after eight overs to 173 all out off 46.5 overs, to suffer their third loss of the competition and slip to third spot in Group A. With their win, Pride moved into second on 14 points and can confirm their semi-final berth with a win over hosts Trinidad and Tobago Red Force in the final round of matches tomorrow. Scorpions, who remained on ten points, can still qualify for the semi-finals but need to beat ICC Americas in their final game also tomorrow and hope Pride lose to Red Force. However, they could have avoided the unnecessary permutations had they not squandered a great start from openers John Campbell, who scored 42 and rookie Jermaine Harrison who struck 22. Once they were separated, however, wickets fell steadily as Pride bowlers slowly dissected the innings. In-form right-hander Andre McCarthy resisted with 33 from 63 balls but found no support, with the last six wickets tumbling for 57 runs. Part-time medium pacer Jonathan Carter once again made his presence felt with three for 26, while Test left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican snapped up three for 32. Earlier, attacking opener Dwayne Smith broke out of his slump with a powerful 86 to lead Pride’s charge to 246 for nine off their 50 overs, after they were sent in. The right-hander got support from wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich with 48, while tail-ender Ashley Nurse chimed in with 23. Skipper Campbell claimed three for 57 with his off-spin, while Test fast bowler Jerome Taylor picked up two for 30. Facing a must-win scenario in order to remain alive in the competition, Pride started poorly when Taylor removed both openers with just 33 runs on the board. He removed the proflic Kraigg Brathwaite, caught at the wicket for one in the third over with nine runs on the board and returned to prise out another Test batsman Shai Hope for four, also caught behind in the ninth over. Man of the Match Smith, coming off scores of two, one, four and nought, added 33 for the third wicket with left-hander Jonathan Carter who scored 16 before he was run out in a bad mix-up in the 16th over. Smith then combined with Shamarh Brooks (20) in a pivotal 66-run stand for the fourth wicket which once again gave the innings momentum.last_img

Religious leaders should lead by example

first_imgDear Editor,The recent news captioned: “Rosignol Pastor gets 40 years for raping minor’’ was very shocking and disturbing since the rise and fall of our so-called pope among other religious leaders in the Christian community reminds me of the Jim Jones who killed 918 innocent souls in the name of God.The current news of a pastor getting a 40-year sentence for raping a minor sets a bad example for the Christian community, as well as other religious communities. As a reverend and religious leader myself, I wish to admonish all religious leaders from every religion to be very watchful; also political leaders and leaders of Government and private institutions. When I attended Bible College or seminary, I was taught a course called “Ministerial Ethics” and over a dozen courses on the “principles of leadership”. I was taught about the three principles or weapons used by Satan to destroy men – power, sex, and money – as stated in the Bible. From the “Ministerial Ethics” course I did, I learn that a minister of religion should not counsel a woman alone, be alone with a woman in a closed office, have a woman alone in his car, eat with a woman alone at a restaurant and same goes for female ministers of religion.Ministers of religion need to set a better example to the church, community, society and nation. Even today we have a lot of “so called” pastors and church leaders who never went through any Ministry training but call themselves Apostles, Prophets, Bishops; many of whom can barely read at a very competent level. What is important in Ministry and every capacity of leadership is our morality, character, integrity and respect for others. It’s not how nice we dress, it’s how morally upright we must be. Good character is the leadership quality that distinguishes great leadership. It is the quality that most people admire. Leaders of good character have integrity, courage and compassion. They are careful and prudent.Ministers must see their own daughter in a next man’s daughter they must see the mothers, sisters, aunts as their own because they must have the love of God in their hearts and don’t see members of the opposite sex as sex objects and rape objects because we will reap what we sow.Our words contain our life – that’s our character and attitude. Life is sowing and reaping.Ministers of religion are not angels and no man or woman is perfect and no sin is too big for God to forgive. We can learn from our mistakes. My heart is broken when I read the bad news pieces in the press. To live in harmony with the people of all religions, races, castes and nations may be added to the characteristics of high character. Character is a God given principle, given by God to man from His holy books.Sincerely,Rev Gideon Cecillast_img

Greenville Port Gains ISPS Compliance Level 1

first_imgNPA Managing Director David F. Williams – Advertisement – After a careful review, meeting the guidelines and procedures pursuant to the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS), the West African Maritime Security Consultancy (WAMSEC) has certified the Port Facility Security Assessment (PFSA) and Port Facility Security Plan (PFSP) of the Samuel Alfred Ross Port in Greenville, Sinoe County.A press release issued last evening in Monrovia by the National Port Authority (NPA), said the Greenville Port now has international best practice, and is in full compliance with the ISPS Code Regime, particularly X1–2 Chapter 16.3–3.15 and 16.4 respectively. The NPA release indicated that in keeping with the Safety of Life at Sea Convention (SOLAS), the management of the NPA instituted an alternative security arrangement, approved by the designated authority that conducted the Port Facility Security Assessment.According to the release, NPA Managing Director David F. Williams explained that the Port of Greenville was originally constructed in 1964 by the African Fruit Company, a German Concession, to facilitate agriculture operations in banana cultivation up to the exportation of timbers as the key export. He said the port for the first time got certificated and certified as an International Ship and Port Security, thus making it to gain Security Level 1 status consistent with the ISPS Code. The ISPS Code is a set of measures to enhance the security of ships and port facilities. It was developed in response to the perceived threats to ships and port facilities after the 9/11 attacks in the United States and it provides a framework through which ships and port facilities can co-operate to detect and deter acts which pose a threat to maritime security. He said the port was officially dedicated on December 11, 1964, by former President William R. Tolbert. The Samuel A. Ross Port of Greenville is Liberia’s third largest seaport with huge potential that is poised to become a beacon of hope for revenue generation, job creation and other associated economic dividends for the entire southeastern region, he added.“This is another historical legacy for the Liberian seaport sector for the first time in more than half a century,” said Williams.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img
