first_imgREVEALED: Why Klopp and Liverpool passed on Pulisicby Paul Vegas10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveLiverpool boss Jurgen Klopp chose to pass on signing Christian Pulisic due to the form of Xherdan Shaqiri.Chelsea have signed the Borussia Dortmund winger for £58m in the last 24 hours. And the Liverpool Echo says the reality is that Liverpool haven’t seriously considered a move for Pulisic since they bought Shaqiri for £12.5million last summer. The Swiss attacker was the Pulisic alternative and he was snapped up at an absolute bargain price. Shaqiri has proved to be a massive hit at Anfield. The 27-year-old has only started 11 matches for the Reds but has already chipped in with six goals, including a match-winning double against Manchester United.Pulisic is still more potential than proven quality having scored 15 goals in 115 games for Dortmund. He has only netted three times in 18 club appearances so far this term. The size of the fee was also prohibitive. Liverpool wouldn’t buy a squad player for £58million and they certainly wouldn’t pay that for a squad player who had less than 18 months remaining on his contract. first_imgEverton boss Marco Silva annoyed after Bournemouth lossby Freddie Taylora month agoSend to a friendShare the loveEverton boss Marco Silva was annoyed with his defence in Sunday’s 3-1 loss to Bournemouth.Callum Wilson stole the show with a barnstorming double at Vitality Stadium, which was sandwiched in between goals from Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Ryan Fraser.”It’s a disappointing result, of course. We didn’t deserve more after the mistakes,” admitted Silva. “We conceded the three goals so easy. I don’t want to take away the credit from Bournemouth but it was our fault. We had good offensive moments in the game but the way we conceded the goals made a big impact.”We reacted well to their first goal. We started the second half doing what we planned, creating dangerous chances around their box but then they scored from one mistake from a set piece and were clinical.”We have to become again that solid team that we were towards the end of last season and at the start of the season when we had 10 clean sheets in 13 games. We created chances and should have scored more but when you defend like that you are not going to win the game.”It was a lack of focus. We addressed these type of moments last season. We were solid at the start of this season and we need to be more solid again. It’s something we must address as fast as we can. We’ve been a solid team before and I don’t see any reasons why we can’t be again.”Last season we improved our away form from the season before but we want to do better than that. We created problems for them, created spaces but conceding goals like that makes you lose confidence.” About the authorFreddie TaylorShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

Messi: Another Copa now begins for Argentina

first_imgLionel Messi has declared that “another Copa begins now” for Argentina after seeing them scrape their way into the quarter-finals.An opening defeat to Colombia and disappointing draw with Paraguay had left the Albiceleste sweating on progress to the knockout stage. They were, however, to complete their Group B campaign with a welcome 2-0 victory over Qatar. Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘There is no creativity’ – Can Solskjaer get Man Utd scoring freely again? ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? That was enough to secure second spot behind Colombia, with Lautaro Martinez and Sergio Aguero grabbing priceless goals for Lionel Scaloni’s side.Much improvement is still required in order for Argentina to challenge for the overall prize in Brazil, but they have at least given themselves a chance.Messi is looking to take positives from that, with the Barcelona superstar now preparing for a last-eight encounter with Venezuela on Sunday. He told reporters after seeing off Qatar: “The important thing was to win to keep going in the Copa, to get through the group stage.”This will be an important boost for what’s to come … another Copa begins now.”This victory must give us strength and make us grow as a team.”Messi admitted that there had been nerves in the Argentina camp heading into a must-win encounter, adding: “It’s tough playing this kind of game due to the necessity, the obligation [to win], the fear of missing out.”But beyond that we played well and went through, which is what matters.”Sergio Kun Aguero Argentina Qatar Copa America 23062019Martinez ensured that Argentina got off to the perfect start inside four minutes.Manchester City striker Aguero than wrapped up the win eight minutes from time, with the 31-year-old recalled after being dropped for the 1-1 draw with Paraguay. He said: “Luckily I was picked to start and luckily at times the three of us worked well together and we won.”While happy to have progressed out of the group, Aguero is aware that Argentina will need to raise their game against Venezuela.Scaloni’s side suffered a 3-1 defeat to the same opponents the last time they squared off in a friendly contest back in March.”They’re quite tough opponents who counter-attack really well and we’ll try to be wise to that,” said Aguero.last_img read more

Simeone plays down rout over Real Madrid

first_imgAtletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone tried to stay grounded Friday’s stunning pre-season rout over Real Madrid.Atletico ran riot at the International Champions Cup after humiliating La Liga rivals Madrid 7-3 in New Jersey on Friday.Diego Costa scored a first-half hat-trick and four goals in total for Atletico, who led 5-0 at half-time, while Joao Felix netted his first goal since arriving from Benfica. Article continues below Editors’ Picks Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? Ox-rated! Dream night in Genk for Liverpool ace after injury nightmare Messi a man for all Champions League seasons – but will this really be Barcelona’s? It was a stunning performance at MetLife Stadium but Atletico head coach Simeone played down the result.”I do not rush to anything,” Simeone told reporters. “I live the reality of the moment. It was a good game. I see them with enthusiasm, optimism, enthusiasm. Now wait for the next game to rotate the players and get to La Liga.””I do not consider this match to be the reality of potential between each other,” added Simeone, whose Atletico finished second behind Barcelona in La Liga last season, ahead of Madrid.Atletico stormed out of the blocks after Costa opened the scoring inside 43 seconds before Joao Felix doubled the lead seven minutes later.Angel Correa and another Costa goal made it 4-0 by the 28th minute, with the latter completing his hat-trick via the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time.Costa netted his fourth six minutes into the second half before he was sent off, along with Madrid’s Dani Carvajal, as tempers boiled over.Diego Costa Atletico Madrid 2019-20“We prepared the game well. Having seen Madrid, we looked for where we could harm them,” Simeone said. “We tried to find good places at the exit of the ball … and we were very precise, that in football it is important.”There is always something that can be improved. Beyond the scoreboard Madrid went to our end with great force. And they had chances. That has to be adjusted and try to add talent and effort. Today all the important teams have three or four talented players in the group.”Portuguese sensation Joao Felix showed there is life after Antoine Griezmann with a dazzling display, which included a goal and two assists for Atletico. On his big-money signing, Simeone added: “I see him better playing in front, with people ahead, so that with his vision of the game he can hurt.”When you have Joao’s talent and enthusiasm for improvement you can play anywhere.”last_img read more

Cole snubs Mourinho in picking best Chelsea boss

first_imgAshley Cole has snubbed Jose Mourinho when selecting his favourite Chelsea boss, with Carlo Ancelotti considered to have been the “number one”.The Blues were transformed into a dominant force domestically and serious contenders on the European stage by the legendary Portuguese coach.Cole, though, was to move to Stamford Bridge as Mourinho’s first spell at Chelsea began to unravel. The former England international did taste FA Cup and League Cup successes, but had to wait for a first Premier League title with the Blues.Ancelotti, as part of a double triumph, delivered that and Cole believes the Italian is the finest manager he worked with in west London. An iconic left-back who spent eight years with Chelsea, told the club’s official website when reflecting on his career: “I think the managers who suited my style were more attacking, which is how I had played at Arsenal.“When [Luiz Felipe] Scolari came in I felt at my best. I felt I blossomed under him and got back to playing with confidence.“Ancelotti was my number one. We played with tactics, obviously, but he gave you a freedom and I was able to attack. That double season in 2009-10 was probably my best season.“It was the most I scored in a season, I felt I was unbeatable in defence and was linking up with others well.“I had a great relationship with Florent Malouda on the left wing, JT [John Terry] next to me and Frank [Lampard] on that left side of the midfield three. I was able to make runs in behind and was always in dangerous spots inside the box.”Ashley Cole ChelseaCole, who was a product of Arsenal’s academy system, swapped one London giant for another in the summer of 2006 in a now infamous move. His decision to leave the Gunners was justified as he went on to collect an impressive trophy haul with the Blues, including a Champions League crown, and a man who has now slipped into retirement is happy with his choice.“I felt nerves,” Cole added on joining Chelsea.“I knew a lot of the players, but it was nerve-wracking coming to a new team with a new manager.“I was excited. It was a tough decision to make at the time, but I was eager to get going. I came to the club a little bit angry inside. I wanted to prove what I was worth, that I was good enough to play at the top and I wanted to keep on winning.“The Arsenal ‘Invincibles’ team was a team of winners with big personalities. But over time, the big players were leaving – Patrick Vieira, Dennis Bergkamp was finishing, Thierry Henry – and I wanted to be around a team that had that will and desire to win.“I’d played with Frank and John Terry with England, Joe Cole, Wayne Bridge, Shaun Wright-Phillips too, and I liked that mentality. They had won the league back to back and I wanted to be part of it. I was ready for it.” Check out Goal’s Premier League 2019-20 fantasy football podcast for game tips, debate and rivalries.last_img read more

New CBS NFL Mock Draft Has Raiders Trading Up To No. 1 For Kyler Murray

first_imgkyler murray looks to pass at the college football playoffMIAMI, FL – DECEMBER 29: Kyler Murray #1 of the Oklahoma Sooners carries the ball in the third quarter during the College Football Playoff Semifinal against the Alabama Crimson Tide at the Capital One Orange Bowl at Hard Rock Stadium on December 29, 2018 in Miami, Florida. (Photo by Michael Reaves/Getty Images)The Arizona Cardinals have the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft and all of the options for what to do with it. They can take a pass rusher like Nick Bosa, they can kick quarterback Josh Rosen to the curb and draft Kyler Murray, or they can just trade the pick and let someone else draft Murray. Based on one mock draft, the third option could be the ideal option.According to a mock draft from CBS Sports NFL Writer Will Brinson, the Cardinals will trade the No. 1 overall pick the Oakland Raiders, who will make the jump from No. 5 overall.Brinson’s mock has the Raiders using their new pick to draft Murray. We are all talking about the Cardinals taking Kyler Murray with the first overall pick and I think that’s entirely possible/likely, but I do want to explore another universe — perhaps one the Cards like even more — where they get to keep their current quarterback, trade down and, you know, give him some help.It certainly seems to be a move that the Raiders are well-situated to make. They have three first round draft picks thanks to trades with the Chicago Bears and Dallas Cowboys, and are the only team in the top-five with a truly-pressing need at the quarterback position.Brinson also noted with some irony that it was the Raiders that the Cardinals traded with to move up to No. 12 overall in 2018 to draft quarterback Josh Rosen. In this particular instance, I’m having the Raiders move all the way up to No. 1 overall, trading with the same team that they helped get Rosen last year, and the Cardinals moving down.Rosen went 3-10 as a starter as a rookie. The team wound up finishing with a league-worst 3-13 record, culminating in the firing of Steve Wilks and the hiring of Kliff Kingsbury as the new head coach.Curiously though, Brinson’s trade scenario does not include the Raiders trading either of their extra first-round picks to the Cardinals to make the trade happen. The incumbent Raiders quarterback is Derek Carr, who saw career-highs in completion percentage, and passing yards, but career-lows in touchdown passes.[CBS Sports]last_img read more
