Milan derby marks new era

first_imgROME (AP):It will likely be Silvio Berlusconi’s final derby as AC Milan owner. And the first for Inter’s new Chinese proprietors.Plus Silvio Pioli’s debut as coach of struggling Inter.Combined with the rise of Milan’s youth-oriented squad after several difficult seasons, tomorrow’s match is being celebrated both as the end of an era and a time of new beginnings.”It seems like a different derby compared to the last several, in terms of interest, tickets, standings and the new developments in club ownership,” Milan vice president Adriano Galliani said.Berlusconi, who purchased Milan 30 years ago, is expected to close a deal next month selling his majority stake in the club to a Chinese investor group that includes the participation of a Chinese state investment fund. While seven-time European champion Milan have not qualified for continental play for three consecutive seasons, the Rossoneri have seen a turnaround this season under first-year coach Vincenzo Montella.Relying on 17-year-old goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, 18-year-old midfielder Manuel Locatelli and forward M’Baye Niang, a relative veteran at 21, Montella has guided Milan to third place with a new sense of team unity.”After all these difficult years full of problems which I’m not going to list now, this might be the first time that we’re re-establishing a close-knit group,” Milan midfielder Andrea Poli said. “We’re on the right road and we’ve got to continue along this path.”Inter, meanwhile, are languishing in ninth place with just as many losses – five – as wins this season.Pioli, the former Chievo Verona and Lazio coach, was hired last week to replace the fired Frank de Boer.De Boer was hired less than two weeks before the season began following the unexpected resignation of Roberto Mancini, who reportedly wanted more control over the transfer market and clashed with Suning, the Chinese retail giant that took control of 70 percent of Inter in June.Inter have a wide array of top-quality players – such as Mauro Icardi, who tops the Serie A scoring chart alongside Roma’s Edin Dzeko with 10 goals each, plus Croatia midfielder Ivan Perisic, Montenegro forward Stevan Jovetic and Italy internationals Eder and Antonio Candreva – but the Nerazzurri were inconsistent and appeared confused under De Boer.last_img read more

Price optimistic despite Boys’ Town’s struggles

first_imgCoach of Boys’ Town Andrew Price is highly confident that his team can rise from the bottom of the pile in the Red Stripe Premier League and gain qualification to the play-off stage next April. Despite being in last place on a mere 11 points from 15 games in the second round of the preliminary stage, the Collie Smith Drive-based club in is hoping to extend their two-match unbeaten run and move up the table. Boys’ Town picked up a point in a 0-0 draw against Portmore United last Sunday, following a 2-1 victory against Waterhouse in their previous encounter. “This is our second best as we had a similar one in the first round. We are hoping to kick on as the defence line have been strengthened with the return of veteran defender Wayne Ellis and the addition of Kurt Thomas,” said Price, who has been at Boys’ Town for over two decades as player and coach. “Our next game is against Jamalco and we are very optimistic. We are last in the table, but the past four weeks have seen some improvements in the team,” he informed. With the new format that will see the top six teams at the completion of the preliminary stage qualifying for the championship play-off, Price says that his team is eyeing a spot there. “The objective is to get into the top six as we have a good balance of young and experienced players in the squad. We will also look to add players during the next transfer window in January,” Price concluded. Boys’ Town are on the same points as Waterhouse, but have the worst goal difference in the league after scoring 13 times and conceding 30 goals. They have won three games, drawn twice and suffered ten losses.last_img read more

Skipping the French Open worked out well for 2009 champion Roger Federer in 2017, so why not do it again? He’s healthy but sitting out this portion of the season for the second straight year in a bid to be rested and refreshed for the grass, instead of putting his 36-year-old body through the grind required on the clay. Andy Murray, the 2016 runner-up, is recovering from hip surgery.MORE RETURNSMaria Sharapova will be getting back on the clay of Paris for the first time in two years, after missing the 2016 tournament while serving a drug suspension, then being denied the wild-card entry she would have needed in 2017 because her post-punishment ranking was too low to earn an automatic berth in the field. (AP Photo/Marcio Jose Sanchez)OAKLAND, Calif. — Golden State forward Andre Iguodala will miss Game 1 of the NBA Finals as he recovers from a bone bruise in his left knee that cost him the last four games of the Western Conference finals.Iguodala’s absence is a huge blow to the Warriors’ defense as it works to stop LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Golden State coach Steve Kerr said several players will be called upon Thursday to handle the load that is James, making his eighth straight finals appearance.ADVERTISEMENT Kevon Looney has been starting in Iguodala’s place.Looney planned to talk to Iguodala about the task of guarding James.“I’ll pick his brain about some things … some tendencies of LeBron, the fact of the switches or small things like that to help me out,” Looney said. “He’s one of the best defenders in the league.”That’s why everybody on the Warriors realizes it will be a joint effort guarding James.“What he brings to us on the defensive end will definitely be missed,” Green said. “But it just means other guys have got to step up. Other guys have done that thus far. The task gets even harder but I know guys will and it will be a collective effort in hopes that we keep trekking along until he’s ready to come back.”ADVERTISEMENT Winfrey details her decision to withdraw from Simmons film Dave Chappelle donates P1 million to Taal relief operations Forward Kevin Love’s status for Cleveland remained unclear as he continues to go through the NBA’s concussion protocol. He wasn’t scheduled to attend media day Wednesday at Oracle Arena, where the Warriors host the series opener in the fourth straight finals meeting between the rivals.“He’s going to go do some things today and see how he feels,” Cavs coach Tyronn Lue said. “But he is in the protocol still, so we’ll see how he feels.”Both teams practiced Wednesday on Golden State’s home floor, where the defending champions have won 17 of their last 18 postseason games.James certainly understands what the Warriors are missing without Iguodala’s presence and athleticism.“First of all he has very, very quick hands,” James said. “That doesn’t get talked about a lot, his ability to read and react to the ball either in flight or while you’re dribbling or when you pick the ball up.”Sports Related Videospowered by AdSparcRead Next A win, finally “He was MVP of the series in 2015, largely because he took that role on of guarding LeBron. But also because of what he did offensively,” Kerr said. “He’s doing a little bit better today. Some encouraging signs, but we have ruled him out for Game 1. We’ve got lots of guys who can take on that job. It’s a group effort, anyway, guarding LeBron. So, KD (Kevin Durant), Draymond (Green), Klay (Thompson), Shaun Livingston, they’ll all see time on him.”The Warriors said Iguodala, who was injured in Game 3 against the Rockets on May 20, was evaluated Tuesday and is making progress but still has the bruise and inflammation of the nerve surrounding his knee. Kerr has said Iguodala wouldn’t play until he can run without pain.
