Since then dance and Sowmya have been inextricable.Sowmya performed many dance pieces depicting the range of the Bharatanatyam repertoire. She began with Alarippu, the basic eye, shoulder, and neck movement in the racy khandam nadai (beat), followed by Jatiswaram, which is pure dance. In the central item, she did a 40-minute long Shringara Varnam, wherein the Nayaka (the protagonist) is asking her sakhi to get Lord Kartikeya as this is the right time for love. She was accompanied by Geeta Chandran (Nattuvangam), K. Venkateshwaran (Vocal), Manohar Balatchandirane (Mridangam), G. Raghavendra Prasath (Violin) and Rajat Prasanna (Flute). Her performance received a standing ovation from critics, artists, and well-wishers. After eleven years of arduous training, Akka (Geeta, Guru) is confident that I’m ready for a solo performance, and it is an honour to her; as it marks the first milestone in my journey into the ocean of Bharatanatyam”, says Sowmya. An elated and very pleased Guru Geeta Chandran, said, it was an honour, a true tribute from a disciple to her Guru. Academy decision will have negative impact

first_imgLISA DOWNEY To the Editor,The decision to “decentralize” the Academy for Fine Arts and Academics at Bayonne High School is one that will negatively impact the district and the city.AFA2 was presented in every city elementary public school and at the BHS Open House as an academy setting and complete package. It was not presented as a list of available courses which is all that remains. Acceptances and scholarships to other schools were declined by many AFA2 students who chose the academy based on what was presented. Without notice, the district changed the terms of the agreement into which it entered. AFA2 was decentralized with less than seven weeks until the start of the school year leaving students with a program upon which they never agreed.Within 19 days of the interim superintendent assuming his position, AFA2 families received notice of the decentralization. Nineteen days is not sufficient time to evaluate the value of AFA2. Savings are projected yet discrepancies arise. Zero period gym was eliminated for underclassmen and savings calculated. The realization of the need for this course led to its being reopened which, undoubtedly, will decrease the anticipated savings. The loss of even a handful of students to other schools means a loss of tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of dollars. Investing time and energy into saving AFA2 would have benefitted the district financially and educationally. While I understand the urgent need for the district to become financially sound, we are sacrificing programs that made this district shine. This system used to play a significant role in keeping families in Bayonne but as we continue to sacrifice quality programs throughout the district, we will lose the families that have been the heart of our district.last_img

Thank you if you answer my questions. Gabriel López Albarrán / Office of Governor Andrew M. CuomoALBANY – New York’s Governor is continuing to defend the state’s Green Light Law, saying it solves a public safety issue. The law has created tension between President Trump and Governor Andrew Cuomo. In a radio interview this week, Cuomo defended the decision to allow undocumented immigrants in New York State to obtain driver’s licenses.Cuomo says he wants to make sure people who are driving on New York roads pass a driving test. “It’s a public safety issue,” said Cuomo. “So even if you’re not in full compliance with the immigration laws, you can get a driver’s license if you take the test and if you pass the test because we want to make sure if you are driving, you know what you are doing.”Cuomo continued by saying the federal government wants access to the DMV’s database so it can obtain information about illegal immigrants in New York. This month, the federal government banned New Yorkers from applying for the Trusted Travelers Program, which allows vetted travelers to pass through border and airport security more quickly.last_img
