first_imgDodgers ace left-hander Clayton Kershaw might only be 26 years old and might not be an everyday player. But Kershaw’s leadership and approach are leaving an impression on his teammates and organization. For the second consecutive season, Kershaw was named the recipient of the Roy Campanella Award, given to the Dodger player who best represents the spirit and leadership of the late Hall of Fame catcher as voted by uniformed personnel.“Clayton has really grown into his role,” Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. “It’s tougher for young guys who have had success to be vocal. But he has found a way with the older guys and he’s getting more comfortable with that role that he is a leader.” On the field, Kershaw has nearly been untouchable with a 20-3 record with a miniscule 1.80 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP. He is in position to win an unprecedented fourth consecutive Major League ERA title and threw a no-hitter against the Colorado Rockies on June 18.There is a lot of momentum for Kershaw to not only win his third Cy Young Award but also the National League MVP award.Kershaw is also the Dodgers’ representative for the Roberto Clemente Award for positive contributions on and off the field, which he won in 2012. He is also a finalist for the Marvin Miller Man of the Year award given by the Major League Baseball Players Association.Kershaw and his wife Ellen have been active in charitable work, founding Kershaw’s Challenge, which encourages people to help at-risk children and communities in need, including their main charity, “Arise Africa,” which has helped them build an orphanage in Africa. It also benefits their other focal points, including Dream Center in Los Angeles, Cure International in Zambia and Mercy Street in their hometown of Dallas.Piecing together the ‘penMattingly said he continues to search for the best ways to use his bullpen. On Saturday, the bullpen blew a 7-1 lead and lost to the Cubs. On Sunday, on what was being termed a “bullpen day,” Jamie Wright started and the Dodgers used five other relievers to piece together an 8-5 victory. The Dodgers will have some tough decisions to make regarding the bullpen for postseason rosters. Mattingly said he is doing his best to get the most out of each reliever.“We’re matching up out of the bullpen to find the best matchups that we can,” Mattingly said. “Pedro (Baez) has really stepped up and gotten some big outs for us. Carlos (Frias) has also stepped up and gotten some outs for us. And (Chris) Perez has been throwing the ball lately.“Last year we had (Brian Wilson) in the eighth before Kenley (Jansen) and there were no real decisions to make. This year it’s not so simple.”Around the basesLegendary Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda celebrated his 87th birthday at Dodger Stadium and joined his family for the ceremonial first pitch. Frank Sinatra Jr. also sang the national anthem in Lasorda’s honor. … Lasorda shares his birthday with “Sweet” Lou Johnson, who turned 80. … Adrian Gonzalez and State Farm presented a $10,000 check to the Ben Carlson Foundation in a pregame ceremony for the Newport Beach lifeguard who was killed in the line of duty. Former Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal was the first winner of the Campanella Award in 2006. Others to have received the honor include Russell Martin (2007), James Loney (2008), Juan Pierre (2009), Jamey Carroll (2010), Matt Kemp (2011) and A.J. Ellis (2012). Kershaw becomes the first two-time recipient.Kershaw was honored in a ceremony on Monday before the opener against the San Francisco Giants and was presented with the award by Joni Campanella Roan (Campanella’s daughter) and former Dodgers great Don Newcombe (Special Adviser to the Chairman) and received a raucous ovation from the crowd.Mattingly said Kershaw is someone the team rallies around.“He’s respected in the clubhouse by all the guys,” Mattingly said. “That’s hard to say when you don’t play every day. Sometimes you hear it about (Cardinals ace Adam) Wainwright. But he has respect in the clubhouse from everything he’s about: the way he pitches, the way he works and the way he is when he’s not pitching.”This could be the start of a wave of awards for Kershaw.center_img Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorlast_img
