Roberson returns to floor after missing 2 games, plays 12 minutes in loss to Michigan

first_imgANN ARBOR, Mich. — Tyler Roberson played his first minutes for Syracuse since Nov. 21 when he came on for B.J. Johnson just 1:13 into Syracuse’s 68-65 loss to Michigan on Tuesday night.It was his first appearance since SU beat Iowa in the consolation game of the 2K Classic in Madison Square Garden, as the forward sat out two games with an abdominal strain. The sophomore who started for the Orange (5-2) in the team’s first four games of the season played 12 minutes against Michigan (6-1) and finished with five points.“I think he helped us a little bit and we need him to contribute more,” SU forward Chris McCullough said.Roberson’s 12 minutes in his return were a season-low. After quickly coming on for Johnson, Roberson was subbed out nearly as quickly himself. He played just 1:24 before getting yanked by Boeheim for missing a rotation on defense.Roberson fixed the issue, he said, and he went on to play another nine minutes in the first half and tallied two points on 1-of-2 shooting, a rebound and a steal.AdvertisementThis is placeholder textThe forward started the second half, but with the game on the line, he played just three minutes after the break, going 1-of-3 from the floor and adding an and-one free throw with 8:15 to play.But that was his last contribution of the day. The 6-foot-8 forward left the game at the 6:56 mark and could only watch as Syracuse fought for and lost a game of loose-ball scrambles down the stretch.“You can always think like that, but when you’re out there you got to do what you have to do and stuff like that, and contribute,” Roberson said. “It’s a tough loss.” Comments Published on December 3, 2014 at 12:54 pm Contact Jacob: [email protected] | @Jacob_Klinger_ Facebook Twitter Google+last_img read more

Heisler: Something goes right for Lakers: In two words, Luke Walton

first_imgSomething is going right in Lakerdom!Showing how bad things have been, last week’s victory over Phoenix that moved them over .500 was the first time they have fielded a winning team since 2013 when they finished November a heady 9-8.That was under Mike D’Antoni who went 27-55 coaching for his job … which he then walked away from when management wouldn’t guarantee the option year on his contract … instead of tanking the season which would have been the smart-money play if management had thought of it, giving them a shot at Andrew Wiggins, Jabari Parker or (sigh) Joel Embiid.See? Even when the Lakers won (a little), they lost.Last season they finally tanked — or maybe they were just that bad? — going 17-65 to break their record for worst finish … for the third season in a row … keeping their pick from Philadelphia for one more year and drawing No. 2 to get Brandon Ingram. That should pay dividends in the future but that’s then and this is now.Now for the amazing part:Most of the players who have been part of what has gone right this season — Louis Williams, D’Angelo Russell, Jordan Clarkson, Julius Randle, Nick Young, Larry Nance and Tarik Black — were not only here but in rotation last season.Nick Young?Starting in the same backcourt with Russell? As if anyone saw that coming. Not to cheap-shot Byron Scott, the Old School coach who was stuck with a crumbling Kobe Bryant and inexperienced New School players, but the biggest difference from last season to this can be encapsulated in two words:Luke Walton.It wasn’t hard to figure out the Lakers would go after Luke. I did that last February.It wasn’t clear if he would take the job but the rest was easy: He had gone 39-4 running the Warriors in Coach Steve Kerr’s absence. He was a beloved former Laker. Jeanie Buss was desperate for good p.r..In the really good part for the Lakers, they didn’t just get a coach but a style of play … and it wasn’t the triangle offense Luke ran under Phil Jackson or the simple, defense-oriented scheme they ran under Scott.Instead, it was like the one D’Antoni ran while Laker fans dreamed of running him out of town on a rail every day he was here.Here’s one for Dr. Jerry Buss. His last call before he passed away was to hire D’Antoni over Jackson, which was wildly unpopular with Laker fans and blamed on his son, Jim, with even Jeanie Buss claiming her brother had done Phil in.Unfortunately for the Lakers, they had multiple bigs in Pau Gasol and Dwight Howard, making them a better fit for Phil’s offense. With Steve Nash’s injuries and Dwight merely passing through with his skepticism of Bryant, it was a steaming mess, and worse for the following two seasons with Kobe playing only 41 of 164 games.Nevertheless, there’s another term you could use for D’Antoni’s small-ball, floor-spacing, high-powered offense: modern basketball.Kerr installed it in Golden State where Walton learned it, a perfect fit with the Warriors’ smallish, high-firepower roster, leading to their 2015 title.The Spurs’ Gregg Popovich put it in for their last run with Tim Duncan winning titles in 2007 and 2014.The Heat did it with LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, winning titles in 2011 and 2012.The Cavaliers are doing it now with Bron and Kyrie Irving, winning last spring.The Clippers do it with a bigger unit, spacing the floor with Chris Paul running high pick-and-rolls with Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan.Portland, another feared offensive power, does it with Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum running pick-and-rolls with Mason Plumlee.Now the Lakers do it with a roster that doesn’t have much size but does have youth, depth … and, lately, promise.It’s not saying much to point out that better days are ahead if the comparison is to the Lakers’ last three seasons, each worse than the one before.Nevertheless, their two top prospects, Russell and Ingram, are barely starting out. D’Angelo went into Saturday’s game in New Orleans averaging just 15.6 points, shooting 39 percent. The blade-thin Ingram, who’ll need time to grow into professional basketball, was averaging 6.1, shooting 37 percent.It remains to be seen where this young team goes from here. If it’s too soon to count on bringing in free agents as the Laker did in their heyday, it’s more doable when you have a future than it was when Kevin Durant et al., dismissed them out of hand because all they had was a past.Mark Heisler has written an NBA column since 1991 and was honored with the Naismith Hall of Fame’s Curt Gowdy Award in 2006. Boston Marathon Cancelled for First Time in 124-Year History, Goes Virtual

first_imgOrganizers canceled the Boston Marathon on Thursday for the first time in its 124-year history, in order to follow the social distancing requirements of the coronavirus outbreak.The event has been conducted through two World Wars, a volcanic eruption and even the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic.It typically draws 30,000 participants, and had already been postponed from April 20 to Sept. 14.Instead, participants will take part in a virtual event in which they will verify that they ran 26.2 miles on their own, to receive their finisher’s medal.“It became clear as this crisis developed that Sept. 14 was less and less plausible,” Mayor Marty Walsh said at a news conference outside City Hall, where runners traditionally gather for a pre-race pasta dinner. “This is a challenge, but meeting tough challenges is what the Boston Marathon is all about,” Walsh continued, referencing the response to the finish line bombings that occurred seven years ago. “It’s a symbol of our city’s and our commonwealth’s resilience. So it’s incumbent upon all of us to dig deep, like a marathon runner, like we did in 2013, and keep that spirit alive.”Up to one-million people routinely line up along the course track.“There’s no way to hold this usual race format without bringing large numbers of people into close proximity,” Walsh said. “While our goal and our hope was to make progress in containing the virus and recovering our economy, this kind of event would not be responsible or realistic on Sept. 14 or any time this year.”The Boston Marathon, which is the longest-running annual marathon in the world, began in 1897.Qualifying times for this year’s race will be eligible for the 2021 Boston Marathon, which is scheduled to take place on April 19. The 125th anniversary race is scheduled for April 18, 2022.last_img read more

EMMET RUSHE’S FITNESS COLUMN: SITTING IS THE NEW SMOKING

first_imgBY EMMET RUSHE: Sitting has recently been described as the ‘Smoking of our Generation’.The average time spent sitting is around 9.3 hours per day compared to just 7.7 hours spent sleeping.The increase in the amount of time spent on our posteriors is largely due to the shift in the type of work that we, as a society, now do. Where we were once known as a nation of labourers and tradesmen, we are now known for our savvy in computers and I.T.This however, comes at a price, and that price is long hours spent sitting in front of a screen.Just recently, researchers have reported that sitting for long hours can contribute to:Mental health issues A higher risk of death from heart disease and other causesA higher risk of being disabledThe new studies add even more weight to earlier research suggesting that too much sitting is bad for you, even if you get regular exercise.They also say we may need to think about sitting and exercise as two separate behaviours, each contributing on its own to our health.So while that 1-hour jog is great for you, it may not undo the 8 hours sitting at your desk. The length of time spent sitting has also been linked with high blood pressure, obesity, bad cholesterol, and too much belly fat.One possibility: Sitting for a long time causes muscles to burn less fat and blood to flow more sluggishly. Both can increase the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and other problems.In some cases, it’s still unclear which way the link goes, says Barry Braun, PhD, director of the Energy Metabolism Laboratory at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. “People who sit the most are more likely to be obese,” he says.
“Are people obese because they sit too much, or do they sit too much because they are obese?”You might also think that sitting would reduce appetite due to your inactivity, but research has also found this to be largely untrue. A team of researchers assigned people to sit a lot one day and to stand a lot on another day.
Each time, the researchers studied how it affected their appetite.

”Going from active to sitting doesn’t lower your appetite or your energy intake, prolonged sitting, may trigger us to eat more than we should, leading to weight gain”.Research is also asking if exercise can balance out the ill effects that sitting is having on our health.Jacqueline Kerr, PhD says it may help people to think about being active and sitting as two separate ways to improve or harm your health.“Does exercise compensate for a bad night’s sleep?”
”So why should exercise compensate for the fact that you sit all day?”It’s an interesting idea that shouldn’t be ignored, in my humble opinion.We are seeing a change in people’s body shapes.I am seeing men more and more with the new ‘skinny fat’ body type.Someone who is ‘skinny fat’ usually have normal arms and legs with all the fat being deposited around the trunk of the body, especially the abdominal region.

It is quite simply the most unhealthy body type to have, you actually have a LOWER life expectancy than someone who is obese.So, what can you do to help?Kerr suggests:Use a standing desk at work. More workplaces are warming to the idea.
Change social norms. At a meeting, you might explain, “I am going to take a standing break.”Give yourself reminders to sit less;
At home, consider a TV commercial your signal to get out of your chair briefly.
At work, use a smaller coffee cup or glass so your trips for refills will be more frequent.
Get up and move around every half hour or so.Once people sit less, they often are open to the idea of moving more and to being more active.

South Africa’s new mining charter

first_imgThe launch of the new charter comes after an assessment of the former charter showed that certain targets had not been met. Under the new charter, companies found not complying could face penalties which could include the revoking of a mining company’s licence. Penalties for non-compliance South Africa has launched a new charter to facilitate the sustainable transformation and development of its mining industry, with emphasis on a target of 26% black ownership of the country’s mining assets by 2014. Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu said her department had concluded an assessment of the progress of the industry’s transformation against the Mining Charter objectives as adopted in 2002. The South African Mining Development Association and the National Union of Mineworkers have welcomed the new Mining Charter, saying that non-compliance would be dealt with. Source: BuaNews The racial ownership pattern of the country’s mining assets has remained largely unchanged, with only 8.9% black ownership attained by 2009 against the target of 15%. The reviewed Mining Charter seeks to correct this, putting emphasis on 26% of SA’s mining assets being black economic empowerment (BEE) compliant by 2014.center_img Racial management, ownership pattern Shabangu said the reviewed Mining Charter represented collaborative work among stakeholders under the auspices of Mining Industry Growth, Development and Employment Task Team. 14 September 2010 It also makes provision for the complete elimination of hostels on South Africa’s mines by 2014, and introduces a sustainable element, premised on the understanding that the social licence to operate includes the environment, health and safety performance. According to the assessment, white men and women continue to dominate top management and technical positions in South Africa’s mining industry, earning much more than their black counterparts, regardless of skill and experience. “The observations are that growth in the mining industry has left much to be desired and transformation within the sector has been disappointingly slow,” she said. Also as part of transforming the industry, the department has placed a six-month moratorium on all new applications for prospecting mining licences. The moratorium, which took effect from 1 September, will allow the department to review gaps and inefficiencies in the administrative process.last_img read more

Of course, Evernote for Mac has already had the abilitiy to share notebooks with others. Now those sharing capabilities have been expanded to include Facebook, Twitter, and email, all through a new Share button on the menu bar.A great new feature in this update is the ability to record audio notes, perfect for situations where you want to record a meeting or lecture and take notes at the same time. The ability to create audio notes is already part of Evernote’s mobile apps, but is the first time it’s appeared in a desktop version. last_img read more
